How does it work?
Brainwave entrainment probably sounds like something that your doctor would have done to you if you were in admitted into a mental institution or something. Well, it’s not that complicated or weird and it is something that is totally safe for you to do on your own. In fact a lot of perfectly normal, smart and creative people are reaping the benefits of brain wave entrainment these days.
Basically brainwave entrainment is the process of getting your whole brain to be in tune with one specific wavelength or frequency. People usually use brain entrainment to relax and as a way to release natural chemicals like serotonin or endorphins into their body which make you feel better or induce some other kinds of positive benefits. Some brain entrainment products act as a strength and conditioning trainer for the brain. They treat the brain like a muscle and give it a little work out like the Brain Evolution System.
Think about it this way… Your brain is constantly functioning on some frequency. The neurons are constantly firing away and creating electrical pulses or frequencies that are constantly being emitted from your head. We know this because of EEG (electroencephalography) testing. EEG is a read out of the electronic waves that are being produced by your brain. Usually your brain is operating at a frequency that is higher than it needs to be and therefore not as productive.
Here is a rundown of the basics brain wave patterns targeted through brain entrainment and the normal activity that is happening in your brain on these particular wave lengths.
Basic targeted brain wave entrainment frequencies:
Delta – .1-3.9 Hz – Deep sleep, state in which the subconscious is most in tune with the collective or universal consciousness, subconscious takes over the physical functions and nervous system responses
Theta – 4-7.9 – Dream sleep, enhanced creativity, memory, integrative experiences and deep meditation
Alpha – 8-12.9 – General relaxation, focused learning, common meditation, pre-sleep or pre-waking drowsiness, state of introspective insight, best target waves for beginners
Beta – 13-40 – General awareness, normal waking state of the brain, general cognition, the higher end of this spectrum is associated anxiety, uneasiness and stress
These are the most commonly targeted frequencies for brain wave entrainment.
Now, how does brainwave entrainment actually work?
How do you get your brain in tune with these different frequencies?
The same basic concept is followed as when you place two pendulum clocks against the same wall together. Even if you start out with the pendulums swinging at different times or rates, the vibrations through the wall will eventually ‘entrain’ the two clocks so that the pendulums swing precisely together. This was discovered by the Dutch scientist Christian Huygens in 1665.
When you are listening to brainwave entrainment audio like binaural beats with stereo headphones on, there are two separate audible pulsating rhythms sent to each ear.
Brain frequencies are measured in hertz, or cycles per second. Now, brainwave frequencies that are targeted for entrainment are low, usually somewhere between 0-20 hertz. Since the frequencies of brainwaves are too low for the ear to pick up audibly, a pulse of let’s say 400 hertz could be played into one ear while a pulse of 410 hertz is played in the other ear. Your brain recognizes the difference between these two pulses and will ‘entrain’ to the frequency of 10 hertz. Your brain will then be almost entirely operating on that one frequency. This calms down the excess neural activity so that your brain waves become in-tune to one wavelength or frequency and your mind becomes more clear and peaceful. This is known as brainwave synchronization, which is just one of the awesome benefits of listening to brainwave entrainment. Below is a picture of normal brainwave activity and focused brain activity after entrainment.

WHERE TO START…
The most common forms of Brain entrainment are binaural beats, isochronic tones, and monaural beats. These may sound technical (and they are) but just like electricity, not everyone understands exactly how it works, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it for your own benefit if you know it does work. And, just like electricity, all you have to do to reap the benefits of brain entrainment is turn it on and listen!
It’s not a big deal to get into all of the differences in these technologies right away if you are new to brain entrainment. After trying several of them out, you will discover what works the best for you. If you are eager to discover more about the differences between isochronic tones and binaural beats or what particular wave you would like to target to get specific results, check out my other articles.
